Walked to my seat section door, shook hands with Veryl Switzer (Our first black FB player...sort of anyones... and 1st round NBA draft in 1954), introduced him to the usher who had no idea who Veryl was (Veryl told him he played in 1960). Then down the steps to shook hands with Ernie B as I've done virtually every game since the place opened (this year my hand hurt a bit less after that massive handshake). And on to my seat in a very sparse crowd. The universe is stable.
Regardless of the technical aspects of the game or how the season plays out, last night was just relaxed and fun: A couple of bearded white guys playing well in a new system, one who came to get a chemical engineering degree... walked on as a transfer and started! The team Doc's son who needs to bulk up some and certainly will be no academic problem. A 'Charlie Hustle' point guard who loves to drive to the basket....in control. Wade who loves to set blocks and pics and a whole bunch of other stuff. Should be another no problem player. And Rholeder, another ChemE, who gives 100 per cent when he gets on the floor...deserved a scholarship just for 4 years of hard work. Just a bunch of guys trying to come together. Hartman would have frustrated the heck out of other teams when there was no shot clock, now for BW they shortened it so strategy may be a thing of the past and run and gun in and doubt we can do that.
And did I hear Coach right on the post game show that DJ just has to toughen up and play with some pain?
If there ever was a teachable team, Coach has one this year. Going to get clobbered by NBA talented teams, but should be fun all season to watch playing as the underdog. As a very long time fan, I'm used to that.
