Offense Overall = C-
OC/RB Coach Dana Dimel= D+ The complete lack of creativity has hurt us in more ways than one. Our plays have become predictable in both down scenarios and alignments. Our seemingly embarrassment of riches at RB has been so poorly mismanaged that this has almost become one of our weakest links on offense. How have we not utilized more motion, screen plays, pop passes and reverses (don't know about anyone else but would love to see Harris or Reed on a reverse).
QB Coach Collin Klein= C Injuries have not helped him in the least. Jesse Ertz going down again this season has been a huge blow to this unit. Before his injury though there was not a huge improvement that we are a custom to seeing in the Snyder system. Decision making is probably my biggest critique for this unit. I was hoping Collin would be able to translate his ability to know when to throw the ball and when to run to this QB unit. I also thought the audible aspect of the game would be better to this point.
WR Coach Andre Coleman= C- I would like to give Coach Coleman a better grade but the early production from the WRs has been underwhelming to say the least. I believe there is a great opportunity for improvement with this unit but we have yet to see it come together in a game.
OL Coach Charlie Dickey- C Our run blocking is what is holding back this unit from getting a higher grade. There has been some injuries that have not helped this unit any but typically we see the next man up mentality with little drop off. I believe if we can improve our run blocking this unit will have a solid finish to the year. Pass blocking has been pretty good this year (which makes me think this was an emphasis in the off season, not surprising considering our preseason hype for the offensive fire power).
Defense Overall= B-/C+
DC/DB Coach Tom Hayes= B I had real concerns heading into this season but this side of the ball has slowly become a much improved unit. I think the bright spot has been Kendall Adams in this secondary and it isn't even close. Going into this season I had major concerns at safety and in particular Kendall but he has squashed all of those concerns with a great performance this year. I do wish like all the other fans in the stands we played more man coverage especially in 3rd situations but overall this unit has played better. (specifically Duke Shelley I would say he has made the next step in his growth, DJ Reed is still playing very well)
LB Coach Blake Seiler= C- This is hard for me to be too critical as this is his first year coaching this position after never playing it from his football in high school and college days. However beyond Tanking there has not been steady enough production for me to say this unit has improved or is improving. I believe we don't have our best LBs on the field and that is holding back this unit.
DE Coach Jon Fabris= C- Our DEs have combined for 2 sacks this year, OUCH!! We've faced some pretty poor teams when you consider their sacks allowed rankings - Charlotte 89, Baylor 96 and Texas 89. I would expect better production at this point. We have also seen our DEs out of position numerous times leading to big run plays.
DT Mo Latimore= B Will Geary is having a heck of senior season. It took him a few games to get to his old form but now he is leading the team in sacks and tackles for loss. Beyond Geary I have been pleased Trey Dishon and Drew Wiley as well although they are stuffing the stat sheet they are getting good push in the interior.
Special Teams Overall= B+
SC/AHC Sean Snyder= B+ Matthew McCrane is having a great season. I think there needs to be some improvement in the return game and I think there was some hope to see some improvement or some new wrinkles in the return game with Fabris joining the staff.
Head Coach Overall grade= C Snyder seems to understand what the issues are and I am hoping he makes the appropriate corrections. I feel like his comments on play calling are a fairly strong indication that he will be more involved then he has in the past with Dana's game management. At least I hope that is the case we need an overhaul in the worst way. I still believe this team has all the tools we are just not executing and coaching these "youngsters" to their potential.
-Armchair Coach out!!
