Some of the basketball strategy experts have got to help me out on this.
Was thinking about this as the game was getting into the waning moments. UK's best player is Kevin Knox, a 6-9" SG. Throughout the game, we had guys guarding him that were sometimes 7 inches shorter. They constantly ran the same sets for him, where they would get him curling off screens set on the baseline. As far as I remember, they not once got him the ball near the block and let him use his size. In addition, they never Iso'd him on the wing and let him try and take his defender to the rack off the dribble. It was just constant screening action, like he was Steph Curry.
What the hell is the point of having a 6-9" SG if you're never going to get him into sets that let him use his size advantage?
As I watched the game unfold, there were little things like that, which reminded me how little some coaches know how to adjust to different schemes or personnel. Not really impressed at all with Cal last night. He was going to run their same sets, regardless of time and personnel. We took away what they wanted to do, and they never adjusted.
Props to Bruce.
