Learned this morning that K-State has extended a preferred walk-on spot to 2017 Kansas quarterback Nick Ast (@Nick_Ast17).

A 6-foot-6, 190-pound athlete from Cimarron (a 3A school located between Dodge City and Garden City), Ast has been a regular face around the program over the past year. He was at Junior Day and visited unofficially back in September for the FAU game. Ast is the son of a former Wildcat too. His father David Ast (I believe is his name) played at K-State in the early-80's.

I'm told Ast is leaning towards accepting K-State's PWO opportunity over scholarship offers from Pitt State, Emporia State, Fort Hays State, and Butler County C.C. among others. He's got surprising speed with those long strides that makes him an able runner, and shows a pretty quick release on passes that come out of his hand with nice touch.

In my opinion, this is yet another sign pointing to the imminent exit of DeWayne Betts from this class (something I've long alluded to here). As has been discussed here within the last week or more, Betts is a player that underwhelmed coaches with his abilities and overall figure during a camp in Manhattan over the summer. It's been downhill with his recruitment practically ever since.
