Visited it for the first time today Because I’m working in Garden City this week.Stunning! I am a geologist so it’s right up my alley. A fairly new State Park. If one is headed out to Colorado and want a 1-2 hour side trip this is located approximately 25 miles south of Oakley on US-83. It is a badlands topograph, Niobara Formation chalk erosional remnants. These sediments were desposited in a shallow tropical seas during the Cretaceous Era (145-65 millions years before the present). The end of the Cretaceous was when the dinosaurs died off and 80% of all life on earth went extinct. It was good for us because afterwards Mammals dominate Some of the most complete and fantastic fossils ever found are located in these chalk beds. Another great stop is the Sternberg museum in Hays, KS which has these fossils on display.
Anyway if you do visit, be sure to also visit Monument Rocks. It is located approximately 2 miles north of Little Jerusalem and a few miles east. Nice thing about it is can actually walk around the rocks and look for fossils. Little Jerusalem has designated paths that don’t really allow you to get close to a lot of the chalk formations.
