Midway through the first quarter, veteran defensive coordinator Tom Hayes, who dissected Patrick Mahomes’s tendency to utilize the flat, called the Wildcats defensive backs to switch from zone to a cover 2 defense, and made Reed responsible for dangerous wide receiver Cameron Baston — a clear sign of Hayes’ faith in catering to Reed’s aggressive nature, and a demonstration of his players’ willingness to take risks against a powerful passing attack.

“I was thinking in my head, ‘I’m going to play this really aggressive. If they throw it, they throw it, and if they don’t, they don’t, but I’m going to be in the flat, and I’m going to make this play,’” Reed recalled. “That’s what happened.”

“Super big-time,” cornerback Duke Shelley said. “He was in cover 2. They weren’t used to seeing us play cover 2 on the field. They were popping up for quick gains and Coach Hayes made a good call. He saw it and jumped it and changed the momentum of the game right there.”

Players give lots of credit to Tom Hayes after the game.
