This is not a Yost-bashing in any way. But it is a fair point of discussion whether Ryan Madson was the right pitcher to send out against the top of the Jays order in the 8th inning last night. All the discussion I have heard questions why Wade Davis was not used to start the 8th. Obviously the plan was to bring Davis in if anyone reached 2nd base. My question is -- if not Madson, why not send Herrera back out in the 8th rather than Davis initially? You could still have the plan to bring in Davis if anyone reaches 2nd. Herrera had already pitched in 2 innings, but he had only thrown 21 pitches. And unlike Madson or even Davis at that point, Herrera had already shown that he was effective last night in the 5 outs he got. I'm guessing the prospect of a rain delay played into the thinking to try not to use Davis before any delay so he wouldn't have to sit after he had started pitching. Using Herrera would have served that purpose also.
