Recruiting Thoughts

Couple of thoughts after reading about the most recent flip today.

First, hard to blame Shack for staying near family and friends at UT. When a school with the resources that Texas has gets into the fold, hard to compete against them head to head. I wish he had stuck with KSU, but if he were my son, and he was offered his dream school late in the process, I'd tell him to go to his dream school as well.

Recruiting is a nasty business. Both sides aren't 100% up front about their plans. For every 4 star kid that is playing both sides, there are 2 star kids being played the same way by coaching staffs at every program. Will they offer? Will they not? If this kid goes elsewhere, you are the first call....etc...etc..etc.

Here's what just about everyone on here is picking up that is captain obvious. The schools that resort to negative recruiting tactics with kids are using Coach Snyder's age against us. There's no question about it. Sucks, but it is reality. BUT.......that has been the case for years.

The best cure for that is to win and win every year. Our 6-7 season didn't help us in recruiting. If we had won 9 or 10 games, we would have locked down more talent already. That's what transpired last fall after a good year with Waters and Lockett.

Is there reason to say the recruiting class is lost because of this latest flip? No.

Recruiting is not an exact science. Remember how many on this board claimed Derricott and Clinkscales were going to take us to the National Elite with their skills. Neither ever made an impact. There are so many examples of kids coming in that were not highly recruited and becoming some of the best players in the Big 12. Did we all like Ryan Mueller?

How about Curry Sexton? Even Tyler Lockett wasn't offered by OU or the big boys. Jake Waters had very little interest coming out of high school............I'd take Jake Waters as our QB again today, wouldn't you?

The point of this conversation is to acknowledge that we have some obstacles to overcome in the process with others negatively using age as a deterrent. But to also say that recruiting rankings don't always correlate to on-field success either.

So, while we would all like to see us signing some amazing 4 and 5 star kids, we should also not freak out if we lose a few of those kids to bigger schools. If you are going to fish in those oceans, you are going to lose some one on ones.

I'm excited that a talent like Pringle, and a talent like Skylar Thompson have chosen us this recruiting cycle. Those two could play anywhere in the country. In fact, wasn't Urban Meyer after Thompson and he said no?

If KSU gets back to winning 8 to 9 games next year and being in the Big 12 title race, then it is safe to say that most of the "Sky is Falling" talk is non-sense. If KSU goes 6-7 again, then maybe Chicken Little is right. Until we get to next December, that jury is out.
