I have the day off from work, so I decided to do a little number crunching on our Red Zone Effectiveness. I went back and looked at all of our P5 games from last season and this season to see how we did when starting with a first down inside the opponents 20.
Last season we had 32 possessions (only P5 games) where we had a first down inside the opponents 20 yard line. Of those 32 possessions we converted 27 of them into Touchdowns (84%) and 5 into FG attempts (16%). Of the 5 times we were held out of the end zone 3 were against Arkansas, 1 against OU, and 1 against KU.
This season we have had 12 possessions (Only P5 games) where we had a first down inside the opponents 20 yard line. Of these 12 possession we have converted only 5 into Touchdowns (42%), while we have settled for FG attempts 7 times (58%).
This season we are converting legitimate red zone opportunities into TDs at about half the rate we were last season.
