I seems disingenuous to me that a coach who apparently could not be trusted with the safety of young men in a leadership roll has been in football for 7 years at a very high level in positions where his interaction with players is probably more direct and frequent as a coordinator than as a HC.

The 49'ers , Colorado and Oregon trusted him with the safety and leadership of young men in important roles, but and HC position is out of the question?

I mean either you're a trustworthy dude who made a mistake and you're worthy of being around 18-24 year olds or you're not. And if you are it would seem to me that any coaching position on the team should be open to you. And if you're not you should be out of football, not drawing down $1.5m / yr
