Note: This is just speculation from what I've read & what I've heard.....take it for what it's worth.
First off, let me say I do believe Coach Snyder Was on board with Leavitt.....but things changed...here's how I think it went down..
2016 - Sometime during the 2016 season, Coach Snyder decides that 2017 will be his last season.....he tabs his Son as his successor..(he mentions this in several interviews through the year)
********He floats the idea to Currie/Meyers/Donors and figures out quickly that no one is on board
********Currie/Meyers/Donors come up with an alternate plan that they think will appease Coach Snyder....Jim Leavitt(whom Coach Snyder wanted the 1st time he retired in 2005)
********Coach Snyder begrudgingly agrees to the transition plan since he's starting to realize that he may not outlast John Currie....and may be left out completely of the decision.....also, with Leavitt as HC, most likely Sean Snyder would still have a place on his staff & be able to live near his Dad in his retirement years(which I think is Coach Snyder's main motivation in all this)
2016 - Nov/Dec***Jim Leavitt is approached and agrees to the HCIW contract with $3,000,0000 parachute if LHCBS backs out of the deal....at this point Coach Snyder is on board.
********Sometime in late November or early December.....John Currie is either looking for a new job or told to start looking....Coach Snyder now thinks he can/will outlast Currie.....He nixes the Jim Leavitt contract....still wanting Sean to get the job.
December 15th, 2016 .....Jim Leavitt(with no guarantee's from K-State) takes the money and runs to Oregon, but puts an out in his contract that allows him to leave for K-State without paying a buyout.
February 13, 2017.....Bill Snyder revels he has throat cancer, also it's revealed that Del Miller is retiring.(opening a spot to give Sean more responsibility on Offense) By this time, it's evident that John Currie will be leaving.
February 28, 2017......John Currie is hired as Tennessee AD.....opening the door to get a new AD who may be on board with Coach Snyder naming his son as his successor.
At this point the AD is in place, Sean is positioned to take the reins, Coach Snyder is ready for 1 last Special Season.......a 10 or 11 win season and it's a pretty easy sell to say this staff needs to stay in place to keep things rolling.......not to mentioned that with everyone returning next season...it looks like the new Coach(Sean) will start off with a bang.....it's all falling in to place........then
