Two games that K-State would a, could a, should a won last season.

West Virginia 17 to 16:
K- State held a 13 to 0 lead at half-time, but K-State missed opportunities to put the game away.

K-State’s youth surfaced in the second half. The young Cats made a lot of mistakes against WV.
Ertz probably had his worst game of the season. 10 of 30 for 166 yards with an Int. Rushed 12 times for 25 yards (3 sacks).

Charles rushed 16 times for 53 yards (3.3 ypc). Alex Barnes did not play (cough).

A good rule for any QB (little lone a new starting QB) = Do not try to change the play in a hostile environment when there is less than 10 seconds remaining on the play clock.

K-State let West Virginia back in the game and to the Mountaineers’ credit, they pulled out a W. The mountaineers scored 14 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to win.

K-State missed a potential game winning field goal and lost by 1 point on the road.

Okie State 43 – 37:
Kansas State ran the ball brilliantly. Ertz had 153 yards rushing on 30 carries.
Barnes had 72 yards rushing on 8 carries.
Heck, Charles Jones had 70 yards rushing on 7 carries.

Ertz only passed for 87 yards.

Meanwhile, Okie State had some success running the football, but Rudolph was unstoppable, throwing for 457 yards.

K-State was down 21 to 16 at half-time but came storming back in the second half to take the lead, 38 to 27 (with 12:21 remaining the in the game). To Okie State’s credit, the Pokes scored two TDs in the 4th quarter to win the game. Like WV, the Pokes scored 14 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to win.

The critical mistake. K-State deciding NOT to go for it on 4th & short late in the game (in Okie State territory). At the time, it didn’t feel like either defense could stop either offense.

Get the first down and keep marching down field = win the game (but punted… and Okie State took the ball down to score a TD).

In somewhat of a panic, K-State had a chance at the end of the game to score a TD with time running out, but it wasn’t to be.

Giving up 457 passing yards was a killer.

When your favorite team gets beat soundly, it sucks, but you accept the fact that your team needs to get better, but when your favorite team loses a game that your team could have easily won, it stings for much longer. Just typing this post made me relive some of the pain..ha.

Hopefully DJ, Shelley, Cre Moore (for Starks), Kendall Adams, and whomever wins the other safety spot (could be Walker), will not allow Mayfield and Rudolph to have career games this season. Of course, the D-line needs to step up and bring pressure too (Rudolph was sacked 1 time). When you can’t stop a passing team, you just as well take more chances with blitz packages.

K-State will crush West Virginia in Manhattan this year, but beating Okie State in Stillwater is going to be very difficult.

Like 2012, beat OU, and K-State has a real opportunity to run the table.

Since I’m not a coach, I can talk like this…ha. But yes, first K-State needs to take of business in the non-con. Vandy will not be a walk in the park.

GO STATE !
