"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". With that in mind, I found an interesting article from the Big XII media days that is now on The Slant. We all know how successful KSU's walk -on program has been over the years, and sure enough it has drawn the attention of KU's coaching staff. What I found enlightening was Beaty's explanation of the rules pertaining to walk-on players. Judging from the comments of most of us in threads on the subject, I doubt that very many of you are/were aware of some of the limitations.

Rather than link the article, I am highlighting the portions that deal with walk-ons. Here they are:

"One area the Kansas coaches have made an emphasis is finding walk-ons. Beaty talked about how careful you have to recruit walk-ons because they need to arrive as 'non-recruited' players due to NCAA guidelines."

"You can't recruit a walk-on...he's got to stay non-recruited. The way that we approached it we went through it with a fine tooth comb and were very smart. It took a tremendous amount of organization. When you're talking about two phone calls triggering a recruitment...he's ineligible right then because of that. So you have to be very on top of it...our organization had to be great and our guys did a great job of that for our young guys coming."

"There's probably two or three guys that are coming in right now that are freshmen. I see them right now in our strength and conditioning and the stuff that we can watch. I think they can help us. I think they can help us early. And they are going to have to help us early because of the numbers."

It certainly appears to me that Beaty has "inherited" some of the bragging and self-praise that was demonstrated by his predecessor (Weis). Let's hope his coaching acumen is the same as ole Charlie's also!
