Ventura is the wildest starting pitcher in the A.L.. That doesn`t tell the story of how wild he really is. He can`t hit the corners with any pitch. He is wild in the strike zone with all 3 of his pitches, fast ball, curve and change up as he gives up base hits when ahead in the count 0-2. This indicates he lacks a put away pitch. The 3 he throws are all quite different from each other and most of the time easily recognizable from each other. Now I admit he throws 98mph and if he could locate it would solve his problem. Watching him today he went from 0-2 to 3-2 on multiple hitters.
This is one man`s opinion of a possible solution. Scrap the change which he throws high most of the time and add either a cutter or slider. Why, because both those pitches are near fastball velocity and if thrown in the strike zone would appear to be a strike but drift out of the zone. Now he doesn`t need 5 pitches, but, needs 3 he can throw for strikes. His change up is his least reliable pitch right now. I would suggest a cutter since Hoch and Davis both feature good ones and could mentor Yordano!
Any thoughts???
