...unless someone has some personal experience or knowledge that runs severely counter to what people who know and have worked with Gene Taylor have shared, I do not see how this could be anything but a good hire, and at this point, I am not sure he was not the BEST hire we could have made.
AD hires are not like coaching hires, whose track record is out there for all to see, and as a result, we have a fair to good idea of what we are getting. This is especially true when you hire an Asst/Assoc AD, who are rarely in the public eye. I liked the idea of a Weiberg/Veatch hire for two reasons--continuity, and familiarity (we know what we are getting). But I never bought into the notion that there were not others as or more qualified, or as or a better fit. I just didn't want another Currie.
One thing I feel confident in saying is that UPGRM is no Kirk Schulz, and he did NOT hire another John Currie.
So, count me in. I believe the people involved in this process seemed to have done a good job, and chosen as well as they could have.
Especially after reading the comments from Iowa fans and writers, my gut tells me that this COULD be a home-run.
