Nothing revelatory here, but as someone out here in remote southwest Wyoming asked me why I occasionally boast a Kansas State hat ("Where is that?"), I gave him the same answer I will now provide here. After returning to KSU from a hot spell in a chaotically-desperate war zone, I was welcomed back without a single harsh opinion regarding my experience in Vietnam. Students, professors, and administrators were kind and warmly welcomed me back home.
So, for the next couple of years I settled back in like I never left and our school allowed me the collegial, nurturing opportunity just to again be a peaceful citizen--and one who no longer managed a swaggering, machine gun squad of fourteen dedicated Marines. Graduating in 1970, my K-State educational foundation served me well in a long and happy professional career. I then met a pretty lady from Smith College who professed herself ecstatic to be married to a "Kansas boy," and we enjoyed the happiest marriage on this earth.
At 73, I now seldom, if ever, get back to Manhattan, but I follow Bill Snyder's teams as closely as any of you. And I am now convinced our cherished coach will outlast me, which I fervently hope. In the end, here is the question. Can love of a school last one's entire life? Yes. I am living proof.
BTW, if you look at "Episode 3, Ken Burn's Vietnam," a K-Stater is interviewed.
